Case Western University Diverse LLM Alumni
Ha Thi Thu Le, from
Vietnam, got an LL.M. degree from Case Western Reserve University School of
Law. She did Optional Practical Training
(OPT) after graduation.
The law school helped
us create American style resumes and cover letters. They also hosted
meetings where LL.M. students could meet with employers. These meetings
are how I found my first internship.
I worked for a very
respectable American law firm downtown Cleveland. I spent six wonderful weeks working with
lawyers in the business practice group. I assisted them in many research
tasks, e.g., drafting articles on legal matters, drafting memoranda, sitting in
on meetings with clients, etc.
Later, I became a
volunteer at The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland. I assisted lawyers in the
immigration group to help low income people. I worked on numerous cases -
researching the law, calling places to ask about procedures, and taking notes
in client meetings. Some tasks, e.g., obtaining police reports, medical
release forms, going to federal jails to interview clients, and so on, were new
to me.
Without what I learned
from the LL.M. degree, I would have felt totally unprepared for the work and fitting
into the working culture of these American law practices.
Ha, on the right, with
classmates from China and Thailand.
